Calgary, AB: Today, the Alberta government sided with billion-dollar insurance companies over everyday Albertans.

The introduction of Bill 47, the so-called Automobile Insurance Act, is the start of a no-fault insurance system that will take away your right to sue a reckless driver, challenge your insurer in court, or be fairly compensated after a crash — even if it wasn’t your fault.

This is a dream come true for insurance executives. It’s a nightmare for Alberta consumers.

FAIR Alberta has warned for months: no-fault means less accountability, fewer protections, and more power for the insurance industry.

Under Bill 47:

  • You can’t sue unless the at-fault driver is criminally convicted.
  • Insurance companies decide what care you need.
  • If they get it wrong, you have to fight them in a tribunal
  • Your options for accountability are eliminated, and your voice silenced.

Albertans deserve affordable insurance – but not at the cost of our rights, our freedoms, and our ability to get real justice. The government promised “better, faster, cheaper” — but what we’re getting is less, slower, and stacked against us.

This system doesn’t punish bad drivers. It protects them. It doesn’t hold insurers accountable. It hands them the pen to rewrite the rules.

FAIR Alberta will continue to advocate to put consumers first.
