Calgary, AB: In a striking new poll, Albertans are making their voices heard loud and clear: they don’t trust that the Alberta government’s proposed no-fault auto insurance reforms will save them money.

According to a survey conducted by Nanos Research, a mere 19% of Albertans believe that their auto insurance premiums will actually decrease under a no-fault system administered by for-profit insurance companies. In contrast, nearly half (47%) say it’s unlikely their premiums will drop at all. It’s a clear signal that the government’s promises aren’t resonating.

But it’s not just about money. This poll also reveals something deeper – Albertans value accountability and justice. A staggering 75% of respondents consider the right to sue someone who causes harm or injury to be important, while 82% believe in holding bad drivers accountable for their actions. Simply put, Albertans want a system that upholds personal responsibility and access to justice, not one that shields bad drivers and protects insurance company profits.

Consumers have a right to be skeptical. Alberta’s insurance industry has enjoyed record profits in recent years, even as premiums have soared for drivers. Yet, rather than targeting these windfall profits, the government is pushing a model that will further empower insurance companies while stripping consumers of their rights.

FAIR Alberta has consistently warned that a no-fault system is a no-accountability system. In no-fault systems, it doesn’t matter who caused the accident – everyone’s covered, and no one is truly held responsible. But that comes at a cost. Drivers who did nothing wrong lose their ability to seek fair compensation for their injuries. Victims of serious crashes are forced into a one-size-fits-all compensation model that rarely reflects the true cost of their pain, suffering, and loss.

The government claims this will lead to lower premiums, but the facts say otherwise. Experience from other jurisdictions shows that no-fault systems don’t deliver savings to drivers. In fact, they often increase costs, as insurers pass their expenses on to consumers without fear of accountability.

Albertans deserve better. They deserve an auto insurance system that is fair, transparent, and accountable – one that protects their rights rather than sacrificing them on the altar of insurance industry profits.

FAIR Alberta will continue to advocate for a better system – one that preserves the right to sue, promotes accountability, and keeps auto insurance both affordable and fair. And with three-quarters of Albertans standing with us on the issue of accountability, it’s clear our fight is the fight of the Alberta public.

Let’s keep pushing for a system that works for drivers, not for insurance companies.
